No other state in the US allows this http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lane_splitting

I heard that they were tossing around enforcing the helmet law in exchange for lane splitting in TX. I can't imagine why anyone would want to ride a motorcycle without a helmet but in TX it is not a law to wear a helmet.

Ya gotta figure that it's Texas.

It was none other than Ronald Reagan who signed into law the California helmet requirement for cycles. His reasoning was that it was not right that the general populace pay to scrape the brains of helmetless riders off the pavement.

Some issues are not so simple as the anti regulation crowd pretends.

Texas stereotyping

Who gives a rats ass what Ronald Reagan thought and his reasoning it just ignorant.

Fact: You can wear a helmet and crash on that freeway and still have your insurance company pay to scrape the brains and body of the helmet wearers.

In Texas it works the same way. Helmet or no helmet...your insurance company pays the loss or the insurance company of the person at fault pays it.

Same as in this state. Lane Splitters wearing a helmet who get badly hurt or killed while splitting lanes...guess what happens?

Actually lane splitting is far safer than sitting in stop and go traffic and risking getting nailed by a car from behind.

And the stats also prove this

I have friends back in Texas that just can't believe that I lane split...saying things like I bet there are more accidents bla bla bla. I told them to look up the stats...I actually posted that link somewhere on this thread and it certainly showed that lane splitting is much safer than what many think.

I am thankful for being able to lane split in CA!

I can't believe that motorcyclists in supposedly "freer" states like Texas meekly accept that they just have to *sit there* during traffic jams in the broiling heat.

Once when I was riding my motorcycle cross country, I'd ridden all night and found myself approaching Chicago in the early morning hours. After enduring mile after mile of crawling through road construction areas that delayed me for hours, I hit Chicago in the dead crush of the morning commute. The sun was up and it felt like 100F with the humidity. I lane split through the entire city of Chicago that morning, I can't even tell you how many miles, and got away with it.

I think they are more fearful of the non motorcycle friendly drivers in that state. If they ever passed this in TX it would take a bit of a driving culture shift to make it successful...as I suspect in many states.

I see guys here sitting on their motorcycles not splitting lanes and I can only speculate that they are either new to the state or new to riding or both. When I first moved here it took me a few weeks to feel completely comfortable doing it. Once I got comfortable I was hooked!

Especially since so many of them are armed.

But yes, self-deputizing drivers are the biggest danger to prospective lane-splitters in the lesser 49. I once spoke to a guy who had just moved to Seattle from California, and whose first 2 attempts at lane splitting were quickly interrupted by car doors.

People here opened their car door on him as he was lane splitting? What a sorry thing to do to a rider. Did he get hurt?
