My husband and I currently live in Bend, Oregon and are considering moving to a small central California coastal town to retire. We love Bend, except for the winters. We are looking to buy, not rent. We don't care about employment or schools. Low cost of housing, mild temperatures (not too hot, cold, or rainy), and proximity to beach is key. Any suggestions?

What's your exact budget? "Low cost of housing" is a bit vague.

Lompoc comes to mind.

We live in Lompoc and like it quite a bit! Have a nice brand new house that was reasonably priced.
Its a small town, with the Air Force base nearby for us AF retirees.

The power plant has been decommissioned so it's not as if anything comes out of those "chimneys". Hopefully, it will soon be used to create wave energy...very exciting for Morro Bay.

Ever thought of something like Ft. Bragg area?

Sounds like you want warmer than Oregon, because your state has some nice coastal towns.

Although you didn't mention how much money you want to spend on a home, unless you're filthy rich there is no such thing as inexpensive real estate on the central coast of California! And, assuming the drought will not continue indefinitely, the winters are typically (or have been for at least a century) rainy. Sometimes very rainy. Too much heat is not a concern nor is "too cold" although temperature is a relative thing.
I'd suggest Pacific Grove in Monterey county on the Monterey bay for a retirement location but you'll have to pay for it.
How much money are you wanting to spend on a home? I know that's a personal question but you need to be more specific if you want good information.
Much of the central coast of California has some of the most expensive real estate in the state and in the country.

Yeah but she said that she was looking for a community on the central coast which Ft. Bragg is not.
