What are the nicest aquariums in Southern California? Do any compare to the Monterey Bay Aquarium?

If you discount screaming kid fest at Sea World down here in San Diego I cannot think of much else besides small, but very nice Birch Aquarium in nearby La Jolla. Not near the scale of Monterey Bay but the same idea and really enjoyable.

The best ones are off the Channel Islands. Admission is free although you may have to pay for a ride to get there. Oh, you will need some scuba gear too.

Affirmative.
Even for the comparatively lazy tourist, Avalon provides fantastic underwater views of a lovely natural 'aquarium', courtesy of goggles and snorkel.

We love the Aquarium of the Pacific in Long Beach. It is in a very nice area with lots to do. You can visit the Queen Mary while you are there as well. Plenty of nice shops and places to eat near by. It is an area that I would suggest for any visitor to make.

I live near Long Beach and must wholeheartedly agree with everyone else who mentioned Aquarium of the Pacific. Here's the website for more information: Aquarium of the Pacific

Definitely a must-see if you're in the area.
