I too remember the 5 cent cones: that is going back many years. As I mentioned in another comment a few days ago, I also remember Coast Curries; they were in the Los Angeles area, only had a few stores and they were much more expensive. I think a double cone was .25 so we couldn't afford them too often.

Remember it well at a grand total of $.35 for a single scoop cone. That was quite the bargain.

Don't remember how much they were, but I loved going to the one on Oro Dam Blvd when I was a little kid. They put a Thrifty in while the Oroville Dam was being built (the only time this town saw lots of money and growth coming in).

Well, except for the gold rush days. But yes, I remember eating many a cone there too.

Grew up eating Thrifty's ice cream, always loved it and always will! The mint n' chip is the best because the chips are like chocolate shavings instead of chunky chips. I have always wanted to own one of the cylinder scoopers and years ago I asked a manager at a Rite-Aid if I could purchase one. He told me that he couldn't and that the stores are very protective of their scoopers, as they get stolen and go missing a lot. Here is a listing for one on eBay:

Authentic New Thrifty Ice Cream Scoop Genuine Rite Aid Ice Cream Scoop | eBay

A lot more than I am willing to spend, LOL!

We used to go to farrels for birthdays. We didn't do an offical party, just got friends together and said we had one and they did the honors. They had Wonderful hot fudge sundays, and it was such a fun place. Even the other stores were less fun after that horrible event, but we'd go there after movies and pig out.

We didn't have regular ac at home when I was in my early teens, so we'd go to thrifty, and get a double. We'd walk around the store shopping and enjoying the ac while getting whatever it was we came for besides icecream. When it was a stick napkin, we checked out and went home.

My favorite was mint chocolate chip since it had LOTS of chips and really tasted like mint.

Now I'm spoiled and get my icecream from a store run by a dairy. But dang Brahmas ice cream is good.

Oh, yes, growing up here in California, eating Thrifty ice cream is part of the experience. I could remember the .05 cent scoops and we'd usually get the triple scoops. It was really interesting that the scoops were perfectly cylindrical in shape from the scooper they used. I still buy the Thrifty ice cream at Rite Aid whenever they're having a sale, usually 2 cartons for $7.00.
