Can a sales career take you far in SoCal? We want to move and my fiance is a salesman; quite successful at our local appliances/electronic store. In Illinois, our family of 3 would be considered middle class family and we live quite comfortably. But how far can his career take him in the huge, competitive SoCal compared to our small town appliance store? Any men who have made a successful career being a salesman and affording the cost of living in SoCal?

Don't take this the wrong way. In a small town he may be successful because he's the only game in town. Sort of big fish little pond.

I have a buddy who sells appliances and he makes a pretty good living. He's single no kids. But not sure about now. He used to sell cars and he made a killing on luxury models. He sold high end cars.

What do you guys consider a "good income"?

A sales career CAN take you far in So Cal. But it depends what you're selling. Personally I would try pharmaceutical sales.

No offense taken, hes in the top 100 salesman of the nation and #1 in the region between st louis, texas and some other state. He works at HHGREGG, but there is not one in California otherwise he would transfer with the company. He's currently making 45K, and champaign,il cost of living is really cheap compared to other cities and SoCal. Hes just worried if we move, he will not be able to provide for us and make enough for the cost of living in SoCal.

A quick look at glass door shows average sales associate making 26k with the top of the range being 54k so I can believe it.

That's what it said, go to glass door and see. Hhgregg pays pretty poorly overall. Store managers only average just around 50k.

Very true. As another poster says, hhgregg pays poorly overall. But he does good with company and it works great with us. Also thats top 100 and #1 in the region within the company only. With that being said, we're hopeful that a sales position in SoCal will pay much better then right now.

As you both know, your husband would have to make much more than $45K/year in order to comfortably support a family in SoCal.

Unless I am mistaken, most sales people in this area who are able to do so, seem to be primarily software or pharmaceutical sales reps.

Do you also have a job, or is this a single-income situation?
If a single-income, $45k/yr is not going to support a family of 3 in SoCal without some serious sacrifices.
Don't get me wrong, people do it, but when you look at the difference in quality of life @ $45k between the two regions, moving would be a huge downgrade for your family.
I suggest taking a trip to SoCal once a year to soak in that sunlight.
It's a great place to visit, but totally different when you live here.
