I'm sure there are plenty of conservative rural areas, but what about cities? I've always heard Orange County is somewhat conservative. Is that true? I've spent almost no time in California and know almost nothing about it!

OC is no longer Nixon country.

Regarding OC (from the article sourced below):

There are now 15 counties that have a higher percentage of Republicans than Orange County’s 41 percent (Democrats are at 32 percent and those without a party preference now account for 23 percent). By the Bee’s definition, 44 percent of the county is conservative and 33 percent is liberal.

15 counties doesn't actually seem like that many in a state that size, although in fairness, I have no idea how many counties there are.

After extensive research (3 seconds on Google) I can report that CA has 58 counties.

What is your definition of "conservative"? I think we need to know that first before we can answer.

Judging by the replies you've received so far, to some people "conservative" means "lots of republicans." But to me, whether an area is "conservative" or "liberal" (or "moderate") involves more than just politics. It is also about the general social, intellectual and religious customs and norms of an area.

So, what does "conservative" mean to you? Can you provide an example of another city somewhere else that you are famiiar with that you consider "conservative"?

How big of a city?

Pretty much all of the areas outside of the major urban areas are conservative/Republican.

This map might be helpful:

This is a really interesting chart. I didn't realize there were still cities along the coast that are considered conservative. I thought it was all blue and I'm not talking about the ocean. Thanks for putting it up LSOC.
