Hi-my girlfriend and I might be moving to the bay area-I'd have a job in San Jose and she'd be going to grad school at Berkley. We're coming from Illinois and dont know the area very well. Any suggestions on where to live somewhere in between?

Default In-Between

For those cities, you'll want to stay on the I-880 corridor... around Fremont, Newark, Union City, Hayward, & San Lorenzo/San Leandro. This way your girlfriend could take advantage of BART (Bay Area Rapid Transit), which is a MUCH easier way to commute! You'd have to drive to San Jose, but that's better than heading the other direction to Berkeley. These aren't the greatest towns, in my opinion, but at least they're more affordable than the Peninsula. Parts of them are a bit shady, so just be aware of the neighborhoods if/when you're looking for housing. Good luck!

P.S. You could also go as far as Pleasanton & Dublin, which are a bit nicer... but the commute could get really bad!
