I would actually rather them keep it as CA-99 .. I like how California State Highways compete with Interstates, it makes Cali seem like its own country..
The last traffic light on SR-99 was in Livingston (between Merced and Turlock), which was finally eliminated in 1996 with the completion of the Livingston bypass.

There are still numerous lights on 99 north of Sacramento.

That's correct, particularly between the SR-70/SR-99 split north of Sacramento and Chico. Several of the signalized at-grade intersections along SR-99 north of Sacramento were replaced with freeway interchanges and ramps.

99 is not going to be upgraded to freeway standards between Sacramento and Red Bluff, aside from the few stubs already done

I like 99 over I-5 too. Gas tends to be cheaper along it. I can Google Map gas station prices so if one mid-sized town has higher prices than the other, I'll keep driving whereas on the 5, you are pretty limited. I also don't like the feeling of being in the middle of nowhere and I think 99 gets better cell coverage too. Going to the Bay from LA via 99 instead of the 5 is only a difference of at most 30 minutes, which isn't that much when you're driving that far anyways (hardly noticeable).

99 is pretty much the highway of my life. My paternal grandparents and assorted family in Fresno, maternal grandparents and other family in Merced and my two older sisters lived up in Oroville. We lived in Oakdale until I hit high school and then moved to Mariposa. We ran up and down 99 all the time. While any drive can be tedious at least on Hwy 99 there are frequent towns and landmarks to let you know where you're at. I-5 was so mind-numbingly featureless and boring I hated it.

love 99, wish the city of fresno/fresno county beautified their section of it and not neglect it just because its on the edge of town. I see 99 go through the middle of cities such as madera and bakersfield and i sense the respective cities actually try clean their section. before i ventured to the 41 and 168/180 through fresno i woud have never guessed that fresno was the 5th largest city in CA passing through 99. Or maybe its just how its going to be since its at the edge of the city that isn't really developed.

now if only the 152 didnt have to go through los banos lights

The only time I prefer 99 over I5 is when I'm going to LA. There's more things to see than empty cow yards that I5 has. But if im driving from sacramento to sacramento, 99 is a death wish.

I generally avoid driving SR-99 through Sacramento for that reason. I prefer I-5 for north-south travel in town.
