This is an article from Victor Davis Hansen, a Senior Fellow at the Hoover Institute at Stanford University (Emphasis added by Mr. Hansen)

The last three weeks I have traveled about, taking the pulse of the more forgotten areas of central California. I wanted to witness, even if superficially, what is happening to a state that has the highest sales and income taxes, the most lavish entitlements, the near-worst public schools (based on federal test scores), and the largest number of illegal aliens in the nation, along with an over regulated private sector, a stagnant and shrinking manufacturing base, and an elite environmental ethos that restricts commerce and productivity without curbing consumption.

Oh goody. Another CA sucks and is dying thread. I predict 10 to 12 pages before it fades away.

Just a philosophical thought. If we made all of the illegal aliens (including the ones from Mars) legal, got rid of taxes and regulations, would that make CA great again? Just a thought. Maybe we’d be the fifth largest economy in the world instead of the sixth!

We need to fix our pension deficit before Ca can be great again. Mars aliens haven't colonized on Earth yet.

SO,2010, 2017, do you think anything has changed?

If anything, it has gotten worse.

Bob.

The state could have and should have done something with the San Joaquin Valley. I grew up there and my aunt and her husband had a cotton farm in Dos Palos (Western Merced County). The degree of poverty and pollution is much worse than it was in the 1960s - 1980s. My aunt and uncle who used to travel all over the Western US on vacation got to the point their were afraid to leave their farm for more than a few hours for fear of it getting ransacked (which happened more than once). While the article is a bit hyperbolic, its not wrong in its assessment that much of the rest of California couldn't give a flying ____ what happens in the valley. The most populous and one of the wealthiest states in the country should not have a huge inland swath that is bordering on a Third World society with the poverty, lawlessness and ignorance that goes with it. Yes, agricultural areas are inherently poorer than urban, but the juxtaposition with the nearby coast is ridiculous. Its like having Mississippi and Manhattan as neighbors.

I googled San Joaquin Valley and found this:

I have family that has lived in the central valley for decades.
