Hi there.

I've accepted a night position at one of the hospitals in the city and wanted some suggestions on where to live. I've read some the posts and done some research online and the consensus is that I should live outside of the area.

I don't mind commuting 30 minutes to 1 hour to work. Granted, traffic is always different working nights from 630 pm-7am.

I wanted some insight from those familiar with the area and/or commute.

I've been looking at San Bernardino county, the Lancaster/Palmdale area, and as far as Santa Clarita.

I'm into hiking and don't mind living in some of the cities along the Angeles National Forest/San Bernardino national forest facing Victorville.

I don't mind living a small town or suburb. My hobbies include outdoor activities and traveling.

Thank you for all your suggestions in advance.

I'd look at living in the base of the mountains. The commute up to Victorville could suck at times. Going through the pass just feels like it takes forever (to me) and there are times it will close due to snow, fire etc. The areas just down the hill are also not that nice. I guess Rancho is ok. I don't know what Palmdale is like, but maybe look there. Or try living in the San Bernardino mountains somewhere.

I work in Victorville as well but commute from Palmdale. It's a 60 mile/ each way drive that takes a little over an hour. I do not advise it if you can help it. The advantage is Palmdale is a MUCH NICER neighborhood than anything near Victorville so I am staying put.

I considered moving closer and did my research after conversations with my coworkers who lives nearby. Here's what I can recommend.

1) Hesperia. It seems like a good family neighborhood with easier access to the I-15. The major shopping will be by I-15 and Bear Valley Blvd. It's a 30 minute commute via the I-15 for my coworkers.

2) Apple Valley. It's east of Victorville and by consensus it has the highest "social economic status" of neighborhood in the area. The disadvantage is the only way to access the I-15 is through the Bear Valley Blvd which can be congested with traffic, making the normal 15 minute drive to 30 minutes or longer. It's also a 30 minute commute via local streets for my coworkers.

3) If you like a bit of "social distancing", a nice family area is called Helendale north of Victorville. This is a perfect small town/ suburb if you're looking for one. There isn't much there except a bedroom community but from what I hear, it's a nice area. The disadvantage is you'll need to drive down to Victorville to do your shopping and the 395 can be congested with big trucks traffic.
