Butte, Tehama, Shasta counties. The summers are hot (usually high 90s and 100s) but very dry. Winters are mild (I live in Oroville - Butte County - and literally haven't seen snow in 30 years). I don't think we even had frost last winter. There is crime, but its not too bad in comparison with much of the country. The Northern Sacramento Valley is actually quite scenic. In the summer months they could enjoy the mountains that surround the valley - lots of lakes and rivers for recreational opportunities. There are quite a number of retirees in the area thanks to the low cost of real estate (for California). Really, the only downside is that the last 10-15 years wildfires in the summer and fall are an increasing problem. While they generally aren't much of a threat to valley towns it does impact air quality.

I don't think the post I was referring to, has a poster from Tahoe. But it would be helpful to include at least the county name, for people searching.

I don't know, it seems many post looking for a unicorn, cheap to live but have all the amenities of a more expensive area. I don't know how walkable or the job scene is where Mr 5150 is.

Consider Reno/Sparks/Carson City area. Snow is much less below 5000 feet (all of the valley floor). Been here 2 years, a couple inches of snow is gone in 1-2 days because of the strong sun.

"Stepfather:...... Spent 20 years in the military" is there a desire to be close to a military installation for commissary privileges ? Sierra Vista, AZ comes to mind....or Yuma, AZ...last snow there was 1932 I believe...both have military presence. I've lived in both places, and would do it again....California too...but could never afford to live there again.

Regards

North and Central Texas. Dallas hasn't had snow in over 5 years, the further south or east very low to zero chance as well. When it does snow in the DFW area, it's a small amount once a year and melts in a day or two. West Texas does get snow. Economy in Texas rarely a problem, cost of living very low compared to California. Look at cities like Abilene, Waco, Longview, Tyler, Sherman.

Since your parents would be working entry-level jobs each state's minimum wage is something to consider. California has $13, Colorado and Arizona is $12, but for now Texas is only $7.25. Of course this is higher in some cities but still it's nice when the state minimum is higher.

Vic, rents in Northern Nevada are really high and there’s a shortage. After the paradise fire many people moved to Chico so not sure how easy it is to get a apartment.

I don't understand. Are you saying after the Paradise fire near Chico everyone moved to Nevada pushing up rents?
