Hi City-Data,
Was scanning Ca, looking at homes on Zillow. Hit on Shasta, Redding, and that area...

Home prices seem a lot lower there than say "The OC", as well as other SoCal and NorCal spots most folks have heard of.

Anyone know why? Is there something wrong or undesirable about the area?

On paper, seems like it might be a nice place... mountains and lake nearby, etc.

Redding is very hot 6 months out of the year. Triple-digit temps are normal in the summers and well into the fall. The area has been fire-prone the last few years, as well.

Have you considered the Sacramento area?

Redding is in a very beautiful setting. The biggest problem there is meth.

Meth and heat. Yea, that’s Redding. Well, meth, heat and Bethel.

The "problem" with Redding is the Governor's "Realignment" of prison releases. Several years ago, it was changed (Thanks to Props 47, 1000, etc. voted by you idiots and your elected politicians' supermajority of liberal democrats).

Historically, Los Angeles County was responsible for approximately 67% of the state prison population. The procedure was that when people were released or paroled, they were returned to their county of origin. Makes sense, that's where families, support networks, familiarity, etc. were all located).

THEN came "Realignment." In a nutshell, it is a socialist "spread the wealth" policy wherein every county in California was expected to take a proportion of the state prison releases, regardless of how many originated there or the strength (or lack of) their social services abilities.

Now you see what happened to Shasta County, and many other areas.

You can thank yourselves, YOU voted for this either directly or for the morons who represent you.

Your bed, YOU sleep in it. Stay in California.

I do think the surrounding area is beautiful, but its very far from major job centers and as others mentioned, very hot. While you get the heat throughout the central valley, somewhere like Sacramento has a much larger employment base which helps drive up the real estate values.

Another consideration is that its extremely conservative in that area, so that may or may not appeal to you. Its right in the middle of "Jefferson" where many highly conservative counties in far northern California and far southern Oregon have wanted to secede from their states and form a new state. They claim that their views aren't represented in the far left leaning states of California and Oregon.

Along with that, you're going to have strong supporters of Trump and may see a lot of views you disagree with. For example, there's been a lot of backlash in Redding around closing businesses and mask wearing related to COVID. One of the local waterparks has been defying the state order to close. Personally, I think that area would be a bit to backwardly thinking for my liking and that would bother me much more than the heat. But, to each their own.

Probably OK for retirees, not for people who need a job.

In spite of all this, I think Redding would be a nice place to live, if someone would just turn down the heat. I researched temperature records as far back as records go, and the peak temps there roughly 100 years ago or so, were in the 90's not the l00-teens. It used to be a nice place to live, back around the time of its founding, and for a few generations after that. Farm/ranch country. Mt. Shasta as a backdrop.

Have you looked at RE prices around Murrietia (SoCal)? Fortuna? (Humboldt County, north coastal CA)? What do you require, OP? If you need access to good health care, for example, that would make a difference as to where to look. Lake County is very cheap, and scenic. (People will say: beware, meth). It's been fire-prone, but someone here said, that the fires there in recent years (two fires) were human-caused. So you could look at Clear Lake. Wineries are expanding into that area. It used to be an old-fashioned resort area in the early part of the 20th Century, due to the presence of hot springs. The nearest hospital would probably be in Ukiah, not far away in neighboring Mendocino County.

If you could give us some of your parameters, we could give you suggestions that would be a better fit.

So you are saying you're an elitist holier-than-thou who fancies himself/herself/itself/zee/pronoun-of-choice brighter, better educated, and more progressive and advanced than those who support Trump.

YOU are exactly why Trump exists and why he is supported so strongly. I support Trump and I'm a highly educated Mensa member. Put that in your smug elitist pipe and smoke it.

People who support Trump are typically either dumb or racists. And you're saying you're a Mensa member, so....
