California Nostalgia: Remember night clubs, dance clubs and music venues where did you hang out?

Share your stories, your experiences. Your pics, your videos

I’ll kick it off.
1970 - The Troubadour, Santa Monica Blvd, west Hollywood before it was the City of West Hollywood.

Video is from the recent movie "Rocket Man": :-)

The Odyssey - 1978 its heyday

Beverly Blvd at La Cienaga, Los Angeles

See me in the 1985 protest line. OMG, I was so cute back then, LOL.

I moved to LA in 2002 and until I moved to SF in 07, I hung out at alternative dance clubs in Hollywood like Blue and Ruby, neither of which exist anymore that I'm aware of... and of course, the Troubador, Viper Room, Whiskey, etc. Great, great times.

Thanks for sharing! Whiskey a Go Go, first group I saw at Whiskey was Guns N Roses. I had always wanted to see Blondie at Whiskey but could never get in.

I also saw Patti Smith at the Whiskey.

Great great times. I was more likely to hang out down the hill on Santa Monica (Blvd).

How about when you moved to SF, which clubs did you frequent?

The I Beam, Haight street, early 80s, & some places downtown (Soma)

https://hoodline.com/2014/08/flashba...ng-the-i-beam/

(I'm not gay & nor do I remember it having mostly gay clients, everyone went & had fun. The way it should be)

1992 - The I Beam, San Francisco, Haight Street

The I Beam, I remember that place. I was "forced" to see the Beasties Boys there with a group of friends. I was more likely to be on Castro street than Haight.

1989 - Trax, San Francisco, Haight Street

But I remember a gay club on Haight, I think it was called Trax.

1964 - Whiskey a Go Go, Sunset Blvd, Los Angeles (The Strip) west Hollywood before it was the City of West Hollywood.

First time I went to Whiskey I had no idea the "storied" history behind it. I was a naive kid from quiet conservative San Diego.

I always wanted to experience a night at The Troubadour but living so far away, it wasn't possible. And, living in a smaller town, we didn't have any night clubs in the vicinity. We did have a large ballroom in town where they'd have dances on Friday and Saturday nights. Sometimes with DJ's, sometimes live music. That was always fun. Occasionally, we'd venture over to San Francisco and check out the smaller places where we allowed in - since we were under 21. Had to do some schmoozing to the doorman to let us in. The Fillmore (West) was our go-to place, though. That's where I first saw the Grateful Dead play, back in '69. We had a lot of fun. I miss those days.
