Census 2020: Asians Become Largest Racial Group in 2nd CA County (Oakland: neighborhoods, public school)

Interesting census stat:

In 2010, Asians became the largest racial group in Santa Clara county, and in 2020, Alameda County became the 2nd CA county and 2nd on the US Mainland to surpass this demographic milestone, at 32% of census respondents claiming "Asian Alone" as their race, the highest percentage of all groups in Alameda. Honolulu, Hi is the only other US county to have this distinction at this time.

This is nothing new. As a lifelong Californian I've always been aware of predominantly black neighborhoods, what used to be called Chicano neighborhoods, Chinatowns, Vietnamese-American districts, Hmong areas, etc. More recently the rise of Russian neighborhoods and Syrian/Afghan areas too.

Also, not surprised by the demographic representation in those counties. Asian is a pretty broad term too.

Dare I ask where those rising Russian neighborhoods are? Because I've lived in SFBA for nearly 8 years and I only know of one in the whole place - the Richmond District of SF. But it's actually shrinking and is being taken over by the Chinese. So where are those pesky Russkies moving to now?

Richmond District is a rare example of where White growth outpaced Asian growth in the Bay Area.


"Asian growth was more modest in urban areas and the Asian population actually declined in much of Oakland, the northeastern urban core of SF, including part of Chinatown, and SF’s Westside which includes the Richmond district. The Richmond District is a rare example of a neighborhood where Whites growth surpassed Asians, reflecting a broader trend of White professionals embracing urbanism as the Asian population suburbanizes. For instance Asian residents have recently been at odds with SF’s regressive public school system."
