hmm.... A lot of those in the photo do look like shabby do-it-yourself salvage jobs. Very different from the houseboat scene in Seattle, many homes of which look architect-designed. Some of these look like floating shipping containers, or something.

I remember reading, that Alan Watts lived in one of those houseboats, and for awhile shared his space with Lama Govinda, a very gifted writer on Tibetan Buddhism and travels in Tibet (he was German, but became something of a TB "holy man" in robes). His books are still popular in reprint.

I was there.
My boat was docked at the Army Core Of Engineers dock.
I did it for 3 salmon seasons and it was a free dock.
That was back in my young wild days.
The area had a lot of people that marched to the tune of a different drummer.

"Salmon seasons"? The Bay Area had salmon seasons back then? Commercial salmon fishing?

Yes.
I did 3 seasons there.
There was also a little place called Fisherman’s Wharf” we used to buy bait and ice at.
Perhaps you’ve heard of it .

Most of the time we were out of Bodega Bay or spending a week at Drakes Bay.
Those places were easier on the fuel bill.

Except as I recall, the OP dropped his anchor offshore, among the marshes, where there are no parking meters...

That still goes on, of sorts. They're crushing some of the boats now.
