Considering moving to a quiet, old-fashioned kind of small city out in the mountains. I want plenty plenty of snow and plenty dark at night. Somewhere you won't find a bunch of vacationers driving around.

It doesn't really need to be that close to lake tahoe, but those are the mountains I'm picturing. Got anything?

My usual disclaimer about wildfire risk: Look at the CA Fire Hazard map and know what you're getting into before buying. Get fire insurance quotes before making offers as premiums have gotten very expensive for small mountain towns. And make sure you are prepared to evacuate during fire season and know multiple escape routes.

Bridgeport, CA (not really "in the mountains" per se, but nice mountain views and a cool little town that may be worth checking out)

Yeah, a lot of people want to move back in time essentially. That would be nice. Even Tahoe itself was on fire last year. Insane wildfires now from here on out.

Any where I might be able to rent an apartment? I didn't see anything available in those cities.

Small, old fashioned, low light pollution, few tourists...I don't think you're going to find many apartments in such places. Probably need to look at larger communities. Carson City, NV area perhaps?

I lived in Carson City in my junior and senior year of high school and drove up to Tahoe often. It was gorgeous back then and Carson City was a quaint little town (but, yes, big enough to have apartment complexes). It's a little expensive now.

We have gone to Tahoe 1-2 times a year since I was a kid, and it's continued since we moved to Washington State. After the last year when we experienced the nasty fires still burning along I5 near Yreka, Covid came and we skipped 2020 and 2021. This last summer we skipped again due to the threat of fires, and in fact may not go again. Instead we went down the Oregon Coast and into the redwoods. The typical small mountain town is not going to have apartments, and the ones that are there are more likely to be VRBO or Airbnb. I agree with Wile E, and would look at Carson City, Nevada.

Why not look in Humboldt County, OP? There are mountain towns there, and there are apartments for rent in the coastal towns, and 1-br. cottages, too. IDK about apts in the mountains; you'll have to research that. In the smaller towns, you won't see tourists much at all. What's your budget?

I actually thought about Eureka Ruth, we spent a night there in October. It's not in the mountains, but maybe the Redwoods, Bay and Ocean would substitute.
