There is a bit of crime, but it is possible to get a nice house in a nice neighborhood, and probably not have to deal with that. My in-laws live in a neighborhood just off of Bear Creek. it makes a nice little drive along the creek to their house. There is a walking path along the creek too. I don't knwo what kind of shopping you're used to. You'd have to drive to Modesto or Fresno for some stores.
i agree.

I'm meeting with a realtor- perhaps I can get a better perspective face to face. If you have any other knowledge, please share. I'm writing from the east coast and every bit helps!
I wouldn't move to Merced if I were you if you like Mexican gangs crime and
Mexicans playing there loud carnival music till three in the morning then Merced is not for you.

El Redondo is currently the nicest middle class neighborhood in the city. The low income areas west of G street and south of the freeway are low crime and full of nice people, but there is occasional traffic on and off the freeway to the motels in the area. Starter homes in the neighborhoods east of M St and north of Bear Creek are cute, cheap, and full of young families, but crime does encroach from G St.

A lot of people are underwater in mortgages, and real estate agents are pretty unhelpful.

Advice from locals to newcomers: Anglos are usually encouraged to live in Mariposa and that sort of irks me. Los Banos is also nice. Turlock too. Just buy a ranch out in the country and don't bother with any of it. The mountains are beautiful.
