I grew up in California and moved to Idaho in the 1970's.

I always thought that when I retired I would "snowbird' in California. I knew all the special spots in California and the weather is actually just as good as Arizona in the winter.

Unfortunately, by the time I retired in 2007 California had become a nightmare. I just drive through as quickly as possible on my way to Arizona.

If you want California to become a snowbird destination you need to make it safe and user friendly for visitors. The cost of camping in a state park is astronomical compared to the services received. It is a dirty state, unsafe, and very crowded.

Yeah, some of those special spots are still undiscovered and I tend to linger there on my trips south, but they are few that are left anymore.

In the end, California should NOT focus on attracting snowbirds.

California needs to focus on making it liveable for its residents. Take care of a quality living environment for residents and snowbirds will return.

Life in California is difficult for snowbirds, not sure how the residents cope with it.

I wasn't aware that in order to get from Idaho to Arizona, you have to drive through California. In fact, I'm quite positive that you don't. Are you going off route on purpose to make a point of driving "as quickly as possible" through California?

State parks have those season passes or do they still sell the lifetime membership? I can't recall but if you're a traveler, it would make sense obtain one of those and never have to worry about it. But, I'm not sure what you mean about life being difficult for residents here. Actually, I'm curious to know what exactly makes California so unlivable, except for exceptionally high real estate prices in some areas? We have all the same things as other states. Restaurants, shopping, medical care facilities, higher education institutions, sources for hobby enthusiasts, just an abundance of sources for whatever you want. So what is it about this state that makes life so miserable?

I have to wonder about those who are so miserable here ... is it the state that makes you unhappy or are you just unhappy, in general? I see a lot of people letting politics control their happiness quotient these days and have to question if they're focusing on those issues instead of looking at what's happening in their own home?

I'll take “didn’t realize I was miserable” for $200 Alex .

lol Andy If you read between the lines on many of the comments posted online (not just here but everywhere on social media), there are a lot of unhappy people out there.

This survey is peculiar. They use RV parks as a criteria. Not sure building more would make a place more desireable.

Nope.

Live in eastern Washington now.

If you look at a map, you will notice that to avoid snow you cross over to I-5 just leaving Siskiyou Pass and a the short stretch of road to Redding as possible snow covered roads.

You don't want to tow a trailer in the snow. It is one of life's great adventures if you do, however.

I do return in the spring through Nevada and Idaho. It is a much more enjoyable trip.

I loved California and even when I left in the 1970's I was thought I would return. By the 1980's, California was in pretty bad shape and the descent just continues to this day.

There is no reason why California cannot be a liveable state.

It doesn't matter if California elects left or right leaders, but they should have some common sense and an respect for the environment. The state is ok with burning down the Giant Sequoia's and National Forests and Parks!!! Really a total lack of common sense.

Sad. what was once a great part of the world has become a cesspool.

Sequoia trees can’t reproduce without fire.

Why bother to cater to snowbirds? California has enough great attractions the way it is.

Given who's good and bad it looks like the poll is heavily tilted on taxes. If someone would rather live in humid Florida over mild California, who am I to call them wrong.
