I know nothing about California. Absolutely nothing.

My husband might be getting a job in Arvin, CA.

I was told the best place to live is in Bakersfield CA. I was looking at pictures and it seemed fine until I read some nasty threads about Bakersfield, CA and now I am very discouraged.

I have 4 children under the age of 7 years. I really need advice on where to live (eg. Bakersfield ect. )and what area to live in (eg. area within bakerfield ect.)

What would be the best area to live in if he was working in Arvin, CA.

What other cities or areas are around Arvin, CA. We have only been told about Bakersfield, CA

Thanks

Perhaps heading in the other direction on Highway 58 towards Tehachapi might better serve you.

While I can't advise about specific neighborhoods in Bakersfield, there are a lot of young families, like yours, who really enjoy living in Bakersfield. You might want to explore this site for more info: Raising Bakersfield - Where Parents Connect & Reflect. (there are also more links at the bottom of the site)

I'd read this post from Pawsinten who moved to Bakersfield several months ago with a family. They got negatives from people before they moved but then took the time to report back.

See their report after the first month near the bottom of this link.

Bakersfield is a he*l-hole during the summer and a sh*t-hole the rest of the year. Don't go there!

Tehachapi is in the mountains above Arvin. I don't know a whole lot about the place. Only driven through on occasion. Seems relatively nice, forrested area. It's in between the Valley and desert. Snows up there. I'd at least go look if I was to work in Arvin.

Wow that is all the advice I can get from this site?

I really need your help here. Even the cost of living in the area. Does anyone know about Ontario Canada? What the comparison to cost of living ect.. Or atleast a site I can go on. I thought for sure I would get so many replies.

I used to live in Bakersfield years ago and it's not that bad. It's definitely not Ontario... So it will be an adjustment for you. Summers are steaming. Cost wise, it's not as expensive as Los Angeles. I am assuming the cost of living on Ontario is more than Bakersfield. Why is your husband going to Arvin?
I think Bakersfield would be your only choice if he will be working there. That's the biggest city nearby.

Shaft..this forum is fantastic, but you need to do some research on your own as well. Keep in mind that you get more flies with honey...
I wouldn't put the people down that you want the advice from.
That being said, just google Arvin, Ca and a lot of different sites will come up. You can google cost of living, and compare Arvin to where you live now.
Go the old fashioned route and go to the library. You can check out books on California and really learn a lot that way.
Good luck.

Moderator cut: linking to competitors sites is not allowed

Also, this site: Organizations for Visitors & Newcomers - KernLife.com - Living in Kern County (http://www.kernlife.com/home/ViewPost/24441 - broken link) has names, emails, and phone numbers of people you can contact for relocation/newcomer info. You could also contact realtors or perhaps speak to someone at your husband's potential employer.

The search function right here on this site is also extremely helpful.
