Tahoe City is really nice (on the East Shore, toward the North) but it's really crowded and expensive, but then so is everywhere right down along the shore.

Hmmm. That's funny. The map shows TC on the West shore.

If you can afford it, I would say Incline Village, NV on the north side. Absolutely beautiful, has a small medical center, a fairly new college campus if you want to take some classes (just for fun), all the outdoor activities (including a golf course) you could want. Being retired, you don't have to worry about the weather getting in the way of driving to work, etc. Not alot of shops there, but you have the basic needs and can go in a number of directions to do more shopping. Some night life with the few casinos there as well as a variety of restaurants.

Sierra Nevada is a "private" university. One cannot just take classes as you can at a community college.

I am always amazed when someone responds to a three year old thread to give moving advice.
