Hi! so this is my first post and unfortunately it will probably be one you guys are sick of...
I’m a 17 y/o from Ontario, Canada. Ever since I was in grade 4 I’ve always wanted to move to California, especially LA. I’m a very determined person so I decided I’ll do my research now before I get my hopes up too high. My close friend said she wanted to move to LA and that we should go together (I would never go by myself)
I understand LA is not all glamour and is a harsh place to live, the reason I would like to move here is more for a climate change, not to make it in the "Biz"; my question is if there is any region in LA which is a decent place to live.
All I need is a small studio apt. and a decent income (graphic design or tattooing hopefully) I’m not looking for a huge house with a pool, just a relatively safe area.
If anyone has any other suggestions of places in California which they think would be a better fit please respond. And please note, I for sure would visit here and see if I like any of the cities before I move to see the housing markets etc.

Unemployment is the highest here it's been since 1982, I would wait a few months.

You do understand that you cannot simply get an airline or bus ticket and come to the US and rent an apartment and get a job, right?

Please tell me that you researched immigrant visas, etc. Tell me you didn't just decide to move here and skip the formal process.

Have our US immigration laws become such a joke that nobody even cares anymore?

Get an education in Canada. Start a career and make some money. Then think about moving to LA.

Well if I move there it will be in like 5-10 yrs, its not like I want to move there tomorrow. It's just that alot of people are telling me that California is going through an economic meltdown and that theres riots everyday, do you know if this is as serious or not?

As far as I can tell, the economy is bad all over, and California is having its own problems. I don't live in LA, but I think most of us are just plugging along, having to cut corners and save money, but I haven't heard of riots in the streets. The restaurants and movie theaters are still full. Traffic is still horrible, so people are driving somewhere. I think you need to visit, check out some of the areas, maybe suscribe to a local newspaper (Sunday only), and make your plans for the future. You'll also need to check with immigration. Good luck.

Thanks, this was really helpful I guess I need to just see what direction California is heading in, because if it gets worse I probably won't go.

Economic meltdown, yes. Riots, hahahaha, no there are no riots. Not even close. Nobody can afford to riot. Besides, why riot? In the Watts riots the locals burned out all their local business. They've been economically depressed ever since then. Lesson learned: don't burn out your local businesses to protest economic ails. You just destroy your future in the process.

The only people who got close to rioting were the state workers who had to take a couple of unpaid days off a month.

Yeah, but they did it on their own time, right?

Still not decided according to the most recent news programs I've seen...
