Hi Tommylori2001,

I live in West Lancaster/Quartz Hill and the area isn't as bad as people are portraying. Mainly I think it is the East side of Lancaster and Palmdale I think they are referring to when they mention how crime-ridden it is. The West of Lancaster which I would consider being past 50th street and beyond is fine. In the year I have been here I personally have not had a single problem (touch wood) -People are far nicer and more down to earth than people that I met in Sacramento which I lived in for 3 years. No one has tried to force religion down my throat since I have been here for instance.

I live on 60th between L and K and this is a brand new housing development -We have a great house - where We are is about a 10 minute drive from beautiful cherry orchards that are nice to travel to in the spring and summer here. There are farms just up the road. My husband travels to Santa Clarita every day via the Bouquet Canyon road which is very pretty. The school district here is the best in the region. It is abit impacted with all the new houses, particularly Sundown elementary but they are addressing this and building a new school which I think will be called Gregg Anderson Elementary according to the Daily News.

Gang Activity is a problem here as it is a problem all over California - they are addressing this by giving the problems this town faces lots of publicity and they are bringing in more police and law enforcement to help. Every place particularly on the East sides of these towns in CA seem to have problems of this nature - look at East Palo Alto in the Bay Area - afew years ago it was the murder capital of the state I believe - Palo Alto itself is very prestigious - so you see my point?

I think they will regenerate the East side of this area because there are too many families here who want change to come about. There are so many new shopping areas popping up and that I think will help with the general look of the place. Anyway, at least Lancaster is up front about it's problems whereas places like Santa Clarita and Santa Barbara try and keep their crime under wraps - they don't publicize their crime as much and so their figures tend to be inaccurate - there is indeed crime in those places and the fact that you don't get to hear about it just speaks volumes I feel about those areas. They are therefore conning their residents and future ones into thinking those areas are low crime when they are certainly not. Santa Clarita could never be thought of as a high crime area because it doesn't want to lose it's status as one of the safest places to live in Southern CA.

I think you will find it ok living here - I know whenever I go into LA itself and come back up here it is always a relief for me because I can't stand that amount of traffic - it is just so claustrophobic!! Driving here is a breeze compared...the air quality is better and although it gets hot here in the summer it is a dry heat, not humid so you won't feel sweaty in 120 degrees!!! Feel free to PM me or whatever if you need any more info!! Happy to help

Angry av is bad

I have lived here for most of my life and have seen from good to worst. The crime is going up lowlifes from LA have relocated here and have caused nothing but problems. This was a good small community to raise family's not anymore. I feel like I can't even walk outside of my house anymore and the schools are bad here. To many black people here use to be a white middle class community. So sad to see my home become a slum currently moving elsewhere out of state

Smile Lancaster, CA

Make sure you get a house or apartment on the west side of I-14. The further west, the better it is.

The quality of the houses are fine, but the new lots are small. Stay away from the main streets, like all of the through streets that run East and West and North and South.

I live in a cul de sac street and there is no vehicle or pedestrian traffic at any time. The only vehicles I see are UPS, and the only pedestrians are the neighbors walking their pets or some children playing in their front yards.

I have read some of the other comments about Lancaster, but can not agree with them.

Stores like Walmart, or other big stores are always full of customers of all ethnicities and various races, black, hispanic, and white.

It depends what you are use to, if you will like a mixed community or not?

I moved here 3 years ago, from the San Fernando Valley in Los Angeles because of the huge influx of hispanics that have taken over most of the East, North, and a large part of the West and South San Fernando Valley, and the crime problem there is at an all time high.

The only thing that bothers me in Lancaster are the hot, hot summer days and nights between June to September, and the freezing nights during the winter between December through February. In LA the tempertures are much more mild than here.

But I have a swimming pool so the summer days are not really bothering me if I am inside where the A/C is working, but those cold, cold winter nights are worse than New York city, and I was not prepared for kind of freezing weather in Los Angeles County.

Hope this honest evaluation helps you out.

TommyLori, you will be on the west. You will be safe. I have lived in west Palmdale for 7 years, and I have never had a problem, save the traffic going to LA.

Well if you are only staying a year, you can make it enjoyable as long as you look for a good neighborhood. Im also partial to the Rancho Vista, West Palmdale area, by Marie Kerr park which is a good place to walking or take your dog and kids and not far from the mall, Trader Joes, Barnes & Noble and much much more. I do think it gets far windier over there though as its more open, you also have close up views of the mountains.

Resurrecting a thread seven years old to declare, amongst miriad run-on sentences, what one should know "if your an educated person."
Not a race thing when it goes that far beyond the pale.

Just like the 2nd poster said, take day trips or weekend trips! Whether Mammoth, SB, SF etc. etc. But for the most part, there are some rad people up there (as well as bad like everywhere), good off-roading and rally roads if you're into that. - I say get yourself a shot gun for some skeet shooting and a dirt bike for trail riding. Make some friends and live the best you can whilst there
