I am a 20 year old girl moving to Escondido this summer. I will be working in Escondido and my boyfriend will be working up at Camp Pendleton. I am already aware of some of the crime in Escondido and have been there before, visiting friends. We plan on renting an apartment. We want something nice and in and ok neighborhood, but not too overpriced. If anyone can give me some specific references of apartments in the area that meet this description, it would be much appreciated!

Here are the facts from an Escondido native. Growing up, Escondido was mostly white, middle class families and was a small town just north of San Diego. I remember Escondido was covered with citrus and avocado groves which was a main source of income for the area I'm sure. I always felt safe anywhere I went. Most everyone I knew as a kid, walked or rode their bikes to school, people were nice and mostly everyone was at church on Sundays. The beach was a short bus ride away, you could ride the bus to the beach as a kid and not worry. My parents were proud of the fact that they chose to live here and raise a family, good schools etc. This was not long ago, I'm in my late 30's now. But to answer your question, Escondido is now mostly minority (hispanic) 'm sure the majority are illegally in the US. There is a lot of poverty, project looking apartments etc... The citrus and avocado trees are gone for the most part. You have to be one of the few "well off" families now to live in a safe area. You or your kids cannot ride, walk or take the bus anymore, for many reasons, too many to list. The schools are terrible and the city is no longer small or friendly. These are a few of many reasons not one of our family members live in Escondido anymore. Sad huh?? Try Carlsbad, Encinitas or Solana Beach if you can afford it. Good luck!!

Move closer to base, his commute is going to get old fast. The gates are so congested. Going to escondido though in the morning is ok, moves along well. Never and stop and go unless an accident.

"I remember Escondido was covered with citrus and avocado groves...The citrus and avocado trees are gone for the most part."

You must be misremembering. Escondido valley was pretty much built out by 1980.
