My family and I are moving to California. Some of us will be working in San Diego and I will be working at Camp Pendleton. What would be good housing between those areas so the distance won't be so bad?

At what price range? Do you want to be near the coast?

I would think that being a little closer to San Diego would help rather than being exactly in the middle since you would increase the advantage of driving against traffic. I really don't know that area at all but it seems like traffic would be heading into San Diego in the morning from the north.

Yep, Charles is right about the traffic flow. The I-5 is a PITA during rush hour. You might find reasonably-priced housing in the Mira Mesa area just north of San Diego. You won't be thrilled at the prospect of having to drive all the way to Camp Pendleton though. $1800 should get you a decent rental in most places. Start looking on craigslist now. "Apartment ratings" is another good source of info, if you're looking to rent an apartment.
