I've never been to Eureka but am a little curious about it since it's so remote from the areas that I know. A lot of the negative impressions that get mentioned here and there were unexpected. There's probably a consistent number of people looking for info on Eureka and finding it on searches, which would contribute to the occasional revival of this old thread.

How about going over some of the items that were covered in this past and giving an impression of whether it has improved or gotten worse over 6 years? It would also be a good time to debunk opinions that you didn't agree with back then too.

I've scanned the thread and tried organize the mentioned issues spanning from 2009-2011, feel free to pick and choose as you please since there were quite a few topics discussed. How do you now feel, or what are your new impressions about:

-Economics and industry, has anything replaced the lumber industry for jobs and economic support? How has the economics for the region changed?

-Do you think that trends in crime have changed? Meaning, if someone felt that Eureka had high or low crime back in 2009-2011, would they still feel the same way now?

-What are the trends in the types of newcomers that are showing up in the area? What effect did the "outsiders" back then, who have now lived there for 4-6 years, have?

-How has the youth, crime, and drug scene changed over the years, if at all? Was it all a mistaken impression to begin with?

-Any change in the ethnic composition/proportions of Eureka and its general area?

-Any changes or new issues specifically related to meth?

-Any changes or new issues specifically related to pot?

-The marina, old rail yard, Section 8 apartments and a skate park were specifically listed as problem areas with a high homeless and youth presence. Has this changed?

-"Old Town, Myrtle Town, Cutten and Eureka proper" were specifically listed as perfectly safe for shopping. Has this changed? A little or a lot, better or worse?

-About Eureka's weather, what has it been like over the last couple of years when a lot of the other parts of California experienced some unusual weather patterns?

-Any general thoughts on changes to McKinleyville, Arcata, Fortuna and nearby towns?

-Has Eureka's population continued to drop or has it increased in recent years?

Yes. Prolonged unemployment and job hopelessness tends to wreak havoc with a lot of people's psyches.
