Can’t believe I missed this one. Had to pay 2,5000 for registering our car today. We didn’t pay sales tax from the state we use to live in. Didn’t know about that. Can I deduct this from my federal or state taxes? The car is under a year. Would it have been cheaper for a car over a year? I wasn’t with my husband when he registered it. Thanks.

Yes, sales tax would be deductible if you itemize--however, you have to choose between claiming sales tax or state income tax deducted in California from your paycheck. Do it both ways to see which will work better. Plus if you deduct the sales tax, you use the chart to get a estimated amount of sales tax paid for everything you bought all year, then add the sales tax for the car to that.

If the car was over a year old, California wouldn't have charged sales tax. Sorry.

Welcome to California.

It's part of the price you pay to live in Paradise.

To answer your question, if your car had been over a year old, you wouldn't have had to pay sales tax.

It use to be 6 months but then it changed...

There was quite a cottage industry of Californians buying high end European cars for Euro Delivery and vacation use and shipping home with 6 month arrival...

Making it a year has quashed that...

Technically storage doesn't count... so you need to be using it and some have gone to extremes as saving mileage and gas/service logs before bringing a car into California the first time...

Thank you for helping to reduce are deficit...
