I'll be moving from Michigan to California this summer to start my life over. I'm going through a very rough divorce and am raising 2 kids on my own.

My mom and step dad live in Lompoc and invited the kids and I to move out there and live with them so I can go to college full time to become a Nurse. (I've been taking Nursing Pre-req's here in Michigan for 2 years now)

I've decided to go to Santa Barbara Community College. I kindly told mom that if we move out there, there is no way I could live in Lompoc. I thought I was going to shoot myself out of boredom when we visited there 2 years ago for a whole month.

So any recommendations on what city to move to?

We're looking for something that's within 30-45 minutes of both Bulleton (they both work there) and Santa Barbara (where I'll be going to school). Nothing toooooo expensive. They're used to paying $1150 for a 2 bedroom condo in Lompoc. We're going to need at least a 3 bedroom house with all of us living together. ANY recommendations at all? I have a 7 year old who will be in 2nd grade, so I would like the schools to be good as well.

Thanks in advance

Buellton itself may be affordable

I want to live in the city though, not farm country. I don't really remember what Buellton was like when I was there 2 years ago, but since I can't remember I guess I wasn't that impressed with it. I'd like to find just a normal city to live in, one with a Target, mall, movies...things like that. Is Buellton like that?

There are no urban areas to speak of between Lompoc and SB. Only small communities. It's either expensive SB itself, or, you'll be living in one of those small communities. The time / distance specs you gave make this true.

You could live in Solvang, but that's pretty expensive probably, though Buellton is only 5 minutes down the road if that. It's a city of sorts, not farmland

The OP considered Lompoc boring, and therefore, I surmise, Buellton, Solvang, Santa Ynez, et al would also be considered boring.

Can you guys tell me anything about Santa Maria? I know it's in the opposite direction. How is the city itself? It is a safe town to raise 2 kids in until I finish school? How's the traffic on the freeway from there to Santa Barbara usually?

Santa Maria is the only city around that area that has a Target, Wal-Mart, decent movie theater, etc... It's also one of the affordable bedroom communities for the central coast. Many people drive to SB everyday for work/school.
