A close friend just retired after a bit less than 25 years with the L.A. Dept. of Water and Power, and he's getting nearly 50% of his $90K+ take home pay!

In private industry I'm lucky if the employer matches my 401k contributions, and some employers only match to 50% of your contributions.

I'm sure you can see why I'm very annoyed at what we pay for taxes, and where our money goes. It goes to getting public employees far better retirements than we get, and about the same take home pay while working.

I guess we taxpayers will just have to be satisfied with getting practically zero in retirement so that our public employees can get great retirement benefits.

My friend at DWP said his great deal was because he had to put up with such a BS job. Who knew that life was going to be graded on attendance? Silly me, I thought that graduating college was going to get me a good career. I should have just not bothered, and gotten a job from the government.

The cop salaries in the Bay area(the first five cities on that list) are because the housing was soooooo expensive up there for a long time. Like another poster stated, you could get $10-12 an hour at a fast food place. Also gas is most expensive in the country. Generally almost a $1 a gallon more than So Cal, and So Cal is more expensive for gas than the rest of the country.

So thats why.

Well, neither am I......

With all do respect Mr. Engineer, unless you were/are a Combat Engineer... a WARRIOR in our Army, Navy, Marine Corps, Air Force or Coast Guard, which I doubt; or have walked a beat as a local Police Officer/Deputy Sherriff, which I doubt; or you have run into a burning house as a Fireman, which I doubt, you have no right to judge their salaries, compensation or retirement. In other words, your full of BS.

Yes sir... Mr. Engineer, saddle up and join us/them who are wearing or have worn the uniform of those mentioned above. Get shot or disabled and return and post about how you get too much of a salary, compensation or retirement. I doubt you would.

What's a matter Mr. ENGINEER, we have Engineers serving in Iraq & Afghanistan and cops working in places just as dangerous... too scared, not man enough to WORK to get that BIG RETIREMENT.

Its all about unions & no one protesting the high salaries. I always knew ca has the highest paid cops in the nation just like the teachers. The LAPD work 4 days a week/8 hour shifts. Not too shabby ! The bottom line is the greedy cops,firemen,teachers & prison unions in ca & other states (like ny & nj) own the politicians.

Why complain if you think Government employee's make too much. Go get a government job..! Problem solved..! That's what I did. Those opportunities are nope to everyone.
Everyone I worked with that came from the outside, gave up a much higher paying job to work for the Government and get the good retirement package. I made a lot more money on the outside. The city didn't pay as much, but it was steady and you got a check for the same amount every week, unlike working commission on the outside. Some weeks were great, some not so good, but at the end of the year, I made much more on the outside.
It was worth the financial sacrifice to go to work with the City and get all of the benefits, the paid holidays, four weeks vacation, great retirement package. Those are the benefits that bring people from the outside good paying jobs, to the mediocre paying Government jobs.
With my retirement package, SS, and 401K, I bring home far more in retirement than I did when I was working. I foresaw that early on in my career, so I made the switch and never looked back. You can do the same.
I suggest all who complain about the great retirement package better start looking for that Government job today, but expect to take a pay cut..!
Stop complaining about something that is your control, change careers today...
