Can anyone tell me anything about Tranquility prior to the 1950's? What kind of town it was? What was the primary trade? Anything. I'm doing family research and would like to get a feel for why my grandparents might have been there?

Wow, never heard of such a place...looks like a wide spot in the road 20-30 miles from Fresno, its population is less than 1000 now.

I'd check with the Fresno County Historical Society:

Good idea about historical society. You may even find books that include info on 'old Tranquility'.

I was in Tranquility as a little girl but don't remember anything, really. Sounds like it hasn't grown much.

My guess is that someone in that area prior to 1950 was there for farm jobs.

The OP is in Oklahoma, so if the grandparents were dust bowl refugees they were in Tranquility working the fields.

I wonder if in its best days the town lived up to its great name?

That would be my guess, too.

Most likely they were working in the fields, as others have said. That area has always been agricultural and the Tranquility/Mendota area is especially well-known for cantaloupes. Cattle has also been big in that area, historically. Prior to 1950, there would have been rail service to Tranquility on a regular basis (for passengers and for industrial purposes), but it would have been a fairly minor rail stop, so it's not terribly likely that they worked for the railroad, since they probably didn't have many employees. But it's a possibility. Other minor possibilities include some sort of work at a business (store, mechanic, etc.). But given the OK connection and the era, ag work is likely.

We used to do a lot of fishin'/booniedocking campin' from Firebaugh to Tracy in the Delta/Mendota canal/CA Aquaduct/SanJoaquin River. Caught lots of catfish & Striped Bass....................
