CA property taxes are 1% of the valuation of the property plus any locally voted (66.66% approval required) extra taxes (School bonds, fire department fees etc).

With all the add ons... my effective tax bill is fast approaching 1.5% living in Oakland CA... My friends in Alameda County pay a lower rate because they don't have the benefits of living in Oakland.

The biggest add-on comes from the special assessment districts... like fire suppression and street lighting... hey, my street doesn't have a single street light

We seem to get School Construction Bonds passed around here with 55% of the vote...

Sales Tax is now 9.75% too

CA. sales tax went up 1% in April 09. So for many districts it's 9.25%.
As for property taxes there are many cities which levy parcel taxes...like in mine where in the last year a sewer tax has been added ($600yr) and a soon to be added $1400yr hit for downtown improvements. OUCH!!
