Survival tactic. You gotta do what you gotta do. I think the whole "in state" and "out of state" tuition tier is stupid anyway. A US citizen shouldn't be discriminated against as they move freely about the country. States should encourage out-of-state students to go to their universities and colleges. There's a very good chance those graduates will stay in that state and that can't be anything but a benefit.

The LA Times reporter of that article also had to take the typical jab at anything in the San Joaquin Valley when he joked that the parent told the kid who couldn't afford Berkeley he could always go to UC Merced. The tuition is the same regardless of UC campus ($5076 per semester last year).

Man, I love the L.A. Times. Their opinion page is completely interchangeable with the funnies section. Republicans wanting to cut taxes (all four of them in the legislature) are responsible for some entitled brat not getting into a the UC of their choice, oh wahhhhhhhhhh.

People should go to out of state schools anyway, IMO.
