I am in California for the weekend from NY I was planning on taking the amtrak from LA to Solana beach this sunday June 6, 2010. But i know see the train will only take me as far as Irvine. Should I scuttle my plans or fly to San Diego? recommendations please. Very unfamiliar with the Area!!!!

I've taken Amtrak all the way to Solana Beach several times, so just checked the schedule to see what was going on; I see that for some reason the train itself on Sunday goes only to Irvine (too bad, as the most beautiful part of the train ride is south of there), but there's an Amtrak connector bus that will bring you the rest of the way. You can book tickets on the website. (I haven't been on a bus on that route, but in general it's very easy -- they meet the train, you get on, it drops you off at the Solana Beach station.)

In any case, I wouldn't fly from LA to SD; you'd be spending almost as or even more time getting to and from the airports and checking in as you would be on the train or bus.

We do Union Station to Solana Beach all the time. Just go to the station with ID and buy your ticket. It takes about two hours and you'll have a nice ocean view if you travel during the day.
