What major? Not all schools have all majors.

The California State Universities (23 campuses in the state) are probably the lowest cost Bachelors degree education source in the state.

One way to reduce the cost further is to attend a commumity college first and complete the general ed classes, then transfer to a CSU.

This chart compares the estimated costs (fees, books, living expense) at the different CSUs.

It is last year's costs for in-state students (Not out of state or international) but should be a decent starting point, just remember the costs are going up.

Also realize the CSUs have reduced the number of students being admitted due to the budget crisis in the state. Many campuses are turning away students.

CSUN, 1979 when I started was $500 total per semester including books, parking, tuition, and health fees. Tuition was around $350, (expensive) engineering books were around $100, everything else was about $50. Lived at home for $300/mo my dad charged me. That's a lot of bang for the buck.

Look at the CSUs. Known to be pretty cheap.

Charles, you were at CSUN at exactly the same time as my daughter. She was a Jr in 1979..and her husband graduated that year. Yep, the cost of college has changed just a bit. Think of that and then think of what it cost she and hubby to send their oldest daughter to Colo State starting in 2001? In the neighborhood of $20,000 a year!!!They live in Texas but she didn't have to pay Out of State tuition caused she had a small scholarship..

The CSU campuses have the same "CSU" fees. The individual campuses have different student body fees. Some add a fee for the library, health services and other things. Some are mandatory at some campuses, optional at others. The total difference in cost is going to be negligible. Probably within $200 of each other.

The difference you should be concerned about is the cost of living. It will cost you much less in living (rent expenses) to attend CSU, Bakersfield, or CSU, Fresno than it will to attend a CSU in the Bay Area, L.A., or San Diego.

Also take proximity of a campus into consideration. In some areas the rent near campus is much more than it would be a short commute away. For example, rent in Davis is easily $1200+. The same apartment in Sacramento might rent for around $800. A big difference for a 15 minute drive.
