For most fair weather campers the tent is only about insect bites.

Yea...
What's the big deal?

If an animal was going to attack you a tent would offer no protection.

Not for I at least prefer a tent. However the Hennessy Hammock looks like a dandy idea. Up off the ground and some shelter from any rain.

is a tent is impervious to humans.

?????
What is your fear?

If you fear humans a camper will offer no safe harbor nor will it save you from a bear.

Some camp with a gun under their pillow or in their possession.

Where we do it nether is of a real concern.

I'm brand new to camping, and I fear all the dangerous conditions possible. Both humans and wild animals may attack me? I don't know.

Maybe I need to buy a gun in the first place?

Maybe you just need to do it and see (or to just stay home).

We have had people walk into our camp at night and steal things.
That was 30yrs ago.
We no longer stay in camp grounds.

I've only fired 2 shots (while camping) and that was to scare off a grizzly bear.

We will sleep out under the stars when mountaineering, if the conditions allow for it.

depends.... I have done so in Alaska to Mexico and many places in between. For yrs I would take my motorcycle and a bedroll and be gone every weekend somewhere in Rockymtn west.

I have had MUCH more trouble with PEOPLE than animals. (bugs can be a problem...).

I won't explain the trouble since you are frightened, but NEVER place your tent where some drunk coming into a campground can run over you. (including the OWNER of the campground who may NOT have asked their spouse if you paid, BEFORE running over you.)

I avoid campgrounds. Actually I don't feel too safe sleeping in my car or RV, but I really like sleeping in a rumbling semi truck (within reason... 60 nights STRAIGHT can get a little old).

Tent, open air, camper, car, ... all feel the same. I LIKE camping in WY city parks, and at fairgrounds (If I can't be in the WILD). My top spot is a forest service or national park 'hike-in' tent only (tho not required to HAVE a tent).

The YOUNGER you are the better ! (probably better tasting too )
