I'd almost by an old band tour van and drive it. May very well be cheaper to buy and dump a band's van than to rent something for cross country.
Years ago I used an ABV self pack to move my collection from WI to MA. It was risky, but I took out the bonzers and kept those with me and it worked out fine. But it was a chance.
Do you guys know of any sort of mini-van type situation that would be cheaper to rent and would have storage in the back area?
I used to do one-way rentals of passenger cars quite a bit, mainly through National Car Rental and Alamo. I picked one up at SJC and drove it to JFK. It wasn't ungodly expensive.
But you're talking about a larger vehicle than a compact car, if it's going to hold fifteen cartons of LPs.
Check out the car rental sites, look at what they have on offer and get a few quotes. Not every rental car agency does one-way rentals. But if they need to reposition a vehicle you might get a reasonable price.

It would pretty easily hold your cargo. Add a piece of Plywood for a deck above your cargo and have sleeping space.

what are the best sites to look for something like that besides CARFAX?
U-Haul by the mile cross country would be absurdly expensive, plus I can't air condition the cargo part of the van which is the whole reason I wanted to do it myself.
uHaul has vans that are open from front to back. Not sure what the mileage would be, but isn't that going to apply to anything you rent?
I think you have to buy the transport you need, then sell it when you get where you are going.
I bet those records would fit in a full size car. Fold the rear seat back down and there's a lot of cargo space. I'm thinking Chevy Impala or similar. Probably a lot cheaper to rent than any van or SUV.
Pack them well and hire a mover,and get insurance.
I'm guessing he's more interested in preserving his collection that collecting insurance if the move doesn't go right. Not to mention fighting with an insurance company over what the collection is worth and what is damaged is no fun.
