Talus Expedition Gear created a camper van in a box that can be mounted on the bed of a pickup truck.

The aluminum box includes gear storage space and a kitchen with a refrigerator, stovetop, sink with an attached water tank, and power systems.

The box comes in two iterations: the $11,900 CampPack, and the $13,750 VenturePack, the latter of which has increased electrical power capabilities.

Agree.

And have seen quite a few setups where the tent is actually mounted to the top of the truck cab and/or a minivan roof.

Nicely designed rig, but the fabric tent does not appeal to me. Has any company ever offered a hard-side pop-up similar to the A-frame trailers?

Sometimes, if you search, you can find a used/cared for/ truck camper in good condition, at a fair price. You can look on Craigslist/local newspaper classifieds/bulletin board ad/etc.
maybe similar to this one.

Some may have A/C/ &/or generator.
I've seen some nice ones down to about $4,000.
Best of luck.

Nice setup. Quick weekend getaway type vehicle.

I was looking at a truck camper for after I retire in a couple years. 4 Wheel Camper, Hawk Model. After going over my needs and storage capabilities (garage) I've decided that I'll probably go with an off road camping trailer such as an Opus Air 4. Easy to set up, lots of room and very off road capable as will my truck be.

I had a Hallmark Guanella truck camper for years. Bought in in 2010-is, sold it in 2016 with the truck for a bumper pull. I spent over 300 nights in that rig. Solid carbon fiber blend roof (no leaks), insulated pop materiel- nicely appointed, solar.. It was an awesome camper. If I ever downsize it will be another Hallmark for my truck. It was a 4 season camper. I spent MANY nights in below zero and blowing snow in it. Comfy, comfy, comfy...

New prices for such truck campers generally seem way high to me for what you get, though these models are on the low end of price range. Breaking it down component by component and then adding up what those things cost. The right used one in good condition for a modest price, maybe. Partial DIY upgrading is an option.

A bed and a small kitchen but no toilet or shower for those prices? Cheaper and better to pay for motel or hotel rooms.

Fantasy blinds people to reality.

I am not liking the tent setup or scaling ladders in the dead of a rainng night to go out and pee.
