Hello. There is an excellent chance that my family will be relocating from the United States to Alberta (I'm a native Albertan, my husband is American). We haven't yet decided between Calgary and Edmonton; however, there are excellent opportunities for both my husband and I in either city.
We have a 7-year-old autistic son and the types of services available to him are what will eventually determine which city we settle in. He is somewhat high-functioning, although he has some pretty significant speech impairments. He is currently integrated into a regular grade-one classroom with resource down here in Charlotte. The services here are poor at best, and we are in the middle of a fight with the school board to provide him with a one-on-one aide. Academically he is typical, and there are areas where he shows above-average skills. However, he is falling back because of his language/behavioral difficulties, and he requires an aide to make sure he stays on track. This is difficult for a lone teacher to do with 22 other students to attend!
I've done a little research already into the respective school systems in both cities; however, I'd love to hear about others' experiences. Thank you!
As an aside - we're leaning more towards Edmonton at this time as we have an older son currently attending U of A. Our grandson also lives there.

For what it is worth, I know a family that moved clear across the country to Edmonton because the services available there were considerably better for their autistic son. Mind you, this was 15 years ago or more, so things may have changed out that way.
hello, i would love to read more responses to this thread. I am a mother of a 5 year old high functioning autistic girl and we are moving to Canada mid next year. we too are leaning towards Edmonton and Calgary..cant decide which one yet. the final move will depend on which city has the best services for autism. any help will be greatly appreciated!
This article from 2006 talks about autism services in Alberta - don't know if the information is still representative in 2011, but would suspect it's not far off.
I thank you as well. We're getting closer to finally moving back home and I'm fairly confident that our son will have, at the very least, better than what he currently has available here in North Carolina.
Also, we are most likely going to be moving to Edmonton and would like to know if anyone has any experience with the school system and what they offer in terms of services, ie., speech therapy, OT, aides, etc.
Thanks again!
