Prf not only Canadians are "part of America as well". The general attitude of the US "owning" the entire continent when calling themselves "Americans" pisses several countries off.

For those who are offended when they hear the name of this particular country?
America is the term most often used to refer to the United States. When pluralized, Americas can refer to all of North, Central and South America.
I think we should just make it easy and call everyone Union Members. I'm sure the tea party will be happy with that .

This thread reminded me of this song by The Arrogant Worms.

A lesser known aspect of this is that there's no peace in 'United States' either. Mexico's formal name is Estados Unidos Mexicanos, United Mexican States.

As I've said before, only a minority of people, almost always people who refer to themselves as "global citizens" would be offended when people call the U.S. 'America'. When I was in the UK, NO ONE asked me what part of the U.S. are you from.? No, everyone asked me, what part of America are you from? On the BBC, when talking about the U.S., even the BBC simply calls us America and they mean the U.S., not Canada, not Mexico. The only countries where "United Statesian" is used more than americano, are Argentina and Spain, and even then it is falling out of disuse, preferring for the shorter version americano. All latinos that I've spoken to never say estadounidenses, only americanos or gringos. By the way, it is false for people on here to say that latinos don't like Americans being called Americans. Most latinos identify themselves to the country where they come from, especially ones that don't live in the U.S.

Canada is in North America, not America. America is just a short form (like a nickname) for United States of America, just like a PP mentioned about Mexico.
I honestly don't understand why anyone would get upset about this.

Bingo! Where's the harm? They picked a name with 'America' on the end of it, so what? I know; let's go to the Hague and claim 'patent infringment'.

A national identity isn't totally encapsulated within the name only, it's more about who you are, not what you're called.

Wear the little maple leaf on your backpack and you'll be fine. No one will then call you an American. Be forewarned though that you will be expected to behave in a totally different manner than what has become the norm for Canadian tourists as well now.

Recent travels abroad have convinced me our tourists have squandered any supposed 'morally superior' currency we might have had. I've never witnessed as much rudeness as that displayed by my fellow Canadians.

We're blowing it big time in foreign countries.

We are?

We got the most Respected Reputation in the world according to a recent poll...

Oh, Canada! By self-perception standards, Canadians gave their home nation a score of 84.33, good for No. 4 in the Reputation Institute poll. But perhaps Canuck pride should ring out even more. According to some 42,000 survey respondents, Canada is the most respected country in the world, setting a standard for its level-headed economy and appealing environment. By the estimation of the world, Canada has the sixth-most advanced economy on earth, the fourth-most effective government and is the nation people say they'd like most to both live and work in when given the choice of any country around the globe.
