Canada isn't part of "America" Canada is part of North America (there's a difference.) The country of U.S.A is America. Hense why we call people from the U.S. Americans and people from Canada, Canadians. That's also why we call people from Mexico, Mexicans even if they're still part of the continent of North America. I'm pretty sure Canadians get more offended when someone calls them "Americans."

I don't think, you got the point.

I think, the point of the thread is either Canadians are upset about the fact that people call people who live in the United States "Americans" as if they are the only ones who live on the North (and South?) American continents, and, therefore, were "ultimate" "Americans".

If, therefore, US citizens had no right of calling themselves "Americans", how can you claim that "The country of the U.S.A is America"? You know, what I mean? The whole point of the thread is, IMO, if it's appropriate for the US to be called "America".

Oh, Canada! By self-perception standards, Canadians gave their home nation a score of 84.33, good for No. 4 in the Reputation Institute poll. But perhaps Canuck pride should ring out even more. According to some 42,000 survey respondents, Canada is the most respected country in the world, setting a standard for its level-headed economy and appealing environment. By the estimation of the world, Canada has the sixth-most advanced economy on earth, the fourth-most effective government and is the nation people say they'd like most to both live and work in when given the choice of any country around the globe.

Respect for our fiscal restraint, monetary policies and quality of life are not reflective of how we as tourists are perceived by the front line workers in hospitality industry around the world.

Our stellar reputation has tarnished signifcantly over the last couple of decades and will continue to do so as we continue to get too impressed with ourselves without mixing in a good dollop of "humble" of the good old days.

Travelling world wide frequently in retirement has revealed this unpleasant but nonetheless accurate assessment of how we have become perceived by the front line folks. Once again however; JMHO.

I guess I misinterpreted. I don't know. All I know is when I think of America, I think of the U.S., as a Canadian myself. No clue if that's wrong or not. That's just want I think of when someone mentions America.

So I've never heard of many Canadians being offended. I'm not offended that's for sure.

I think ExtremeMan8 got the point just fine, based on the OP (see above quote). I made the same point, that the continent is called North American, so if they were calling those from the USA "North Americans", then they would be wrong, but to simply say "American" is simply a short form (or nickname) for those living in the US. What would you have us call them, United Statieans?

You're way, way off. How could it be wrong to call U.S. residents North Americans, when they live on the continent of North America?

I was reading a book last night, and it reminded me that in French-language literature, translated books by American authors are always labelled "traduit de l'américain", as if American was a bona fide language.

In case you are wondering, translated English Canadian books are generally said to be "traduit de l'anglais (Canadien)", "de l'anglais (Canada)" or "du canadien-anglais".

I have also seen (rarely though) for English Canadian books "traduit du canadien", as if "Canadian" was a language.

Uh, I think you missed the point. If you refer to a resident of the United States as an American, you have defined what country they live in. If you refer to them as a North American, then you have not.

Seriously - how can so many people misread the OP's question!.

He didn't ask if anyone objected to calling Americans "Americans". He asked if anyone objected to the term AMERICA for the country the United States of America.
