It's of course awful. However, when you hear daycare shooting, you fear it's something like Newton or Columbine, when some sick individual who wants to be famous comes with an automatic weapon and tries to kill all sorts of random strangers indiscriminately. Thankfully, I was glad to hear that wasn't the case here. It appears that this was a case of a man who worked at the daycare being murdered by the shooter, who then took his own life, due to a domestic dispute. He was using a simple shotgun to, not a high capacity rifle, so he probably couldn't have done as much damage as, say, the shooter at Dawson College several years ago did, even if he were inclined. It's very tragic, but thankfully none of the children were hurt and we can be grateful for that. This is terrible, but I don't think there's much anyone could have done to have prevented this.
Amazing how this is barely being talked about, but anytime there is an opportunity to ridicule Americans and gun control the Canadian media is all over it.
This event shows that dimwitted assh0les exist in Canada too. Every single one of these shootings is a tragedy, regardless of which country they happened in.
As with every news cycle event, this one is prone to oversimplifications like "well we're not as bad as the US because it wasn't a semi-automatic rifle" or "see, Canada is just as bad as the US". I don't want to assume that the OP's point in posting here was one of those but I'm afraid it was.

Probably because the gun control debate in Canada is not as intense as in the U.S. Most Canadians don't see every shooting as a call for more gun control, especially since the type of gun used in this crime is not one most wouldn want banned.
However if this wasn't a domestic or targeted shooting perhaps the debate would be more heated especially if a banned weaponed were used, then the conversation may be about questioning if our gun control laws work.
Most I believe think they do, since our gun violence is less.

Sorry then, I stand corrected.
