I doubt most specialists view their career as a stop gap that they will only practice for 3-5 years, over the first quarter of their career it more than pays for itself.

Also consider that many States and Healthcare Systems have loan forgivness programs to attract the best graduates and specialists to their state/hospitals. The Healthcare System I work for has a very generous program in place and pays for up to half of candiates tuition debt.

Further steps need to be taken for graduates that want to become PCP's, as they are woefully underpaid in both the US and Canada. The new Healthcare law takes steps to raise salaries and forgive the debts of those that practice as PCP's for 5 years, so we will see how that works out over time.
That's true, but the US can afford to pay doctors so much partly because the healthcare system is private and because of the high malpractice insurance costs.
If the US has a public healthcare system, doctors would have to make do with lower salaries.
In countries that have public healthcare and reasonable tuition, I think it's best to keep both med tuition rates and doctor salaries in check, for financial purposes.

Obviously Canada is in a bit of a tough spot since doctors can easily go to the US and earn much more than they would in their home country. Brain drain.

I could make a long list but I think it's probably already been discussed to death on this forum.

We need reminding periodically if all we rely upon is internet interaction and the occasional negative interchange with individuals in our travels, that for all of it's warts and blemishes, the U.S. has been a cornucopia for Canada in more ways then we can count.

Of course the relationship needs vigilance as any business arrangement would with two partners of very different background and purse size. Keeping vigilant however does not require us to be completely derogatory in every thought word and deed.

People in glass houses and all that?

It's not my fault the negatives outweigh the positives.
I'm a realist, sorry. Whether the US does good or bad does not matter to me. I'm just pointing out the facts.

Speaking of statistics, Mark Twain popularized this phrase: "There are three kinds of lies: lies, damned lies, and statistics."
