Hey all,

I was wondering if anyone has any suggestions for some nice small towns in British Columbia? I am hoping to find something that's close to water and has a pretty well functioning local economy. We currently live in the Vancouver metro area and I'd like to move away. I spend a lot of my day commuting to and from work and I'd like to spend more time with my family. I can work anywhere (telecommuting) so I'm not necessarily looking for work (though I'm not against it either). I'd also like it to have pretty good schools, with a population in the 2,000 to 10,000 range. This will probably never happen, but sometimes I wonder if we're totally crazy to keep living in Vancouver. Even though it's a great place to live, it's really expensive, so I have to spend a lot more time working than I'd like to.

Thanks,

Everywhere in BC is close to lots of water. Water, water, water everywhere.

Or is it strictly salt water you want to be close to? If you only want salt water that limits you to the islands and coastline.

There are many nice small towns throughout BC that could fit the criteria you've mentioned so to try to narrow it down a bit some more information about your needs would be helpful.

What kind of climate are you looking for and what kind of community and recreational resources are important to you for your family's overall interests? What kind of people are you looking for in your community?

.

How about Smithers? Beautiful surroundings. Four seasons. Four hours to the coast, and four to Prince George.

Thanks for the suggestions, I'll look into them.

What kinds of family activities are available in places like Kelowna, Penticton, and Vernon in the winter time for families? We spend a lot of time going to things like Science World, the Vancouver Aquarium, etc. in the winter. One of our concerns about moving to a smaller centre is that there will be a lot fewer family activities for us to do with our kids (5, 2.5, 8 months old) in the winter.

Thanks,

I spent 10 days in Salmon Arm. It was beautiful! No idea about the economy though.

Salmon Arm ( my nephew's wife is from there ! ) is lovely. Shuswap Lake is great for house boating in the summer as well.

Indeed it is. This is the view, just outside of town that I was greeted with on the way to his house. He lives further down, in the valley to the right. BC was the first time I ever really had to look UP at the Earth. lol

That is Mt. Ida on the left, and we 4x4'd the snot out of that thing. And up the one on the right as well.

We weren't able to do any boating unfortunately. There had been some pretty awful floods in the Shuswap region a day or two before I arrived. There were logs and deadheads EVERYWHERE. This was 2012, I believe.

I NEED to get back there. I love, love, love where I live right now. It's where I grew up. 10 days there made me seriously consider a relocation.
