And of course we're less conservative when it comes to pot and more conservative when it comes to booze.

I do think that immigration does affect a country's values, and in a country like Canada with such huge levels it makes a difference when the vast majority of immigrants are at least somewhat more socially conservative on average than the native-born population. And it isn't just Muslims, as foreign-born Christians also tend to be more socially conservative than native-born Canadians of Christian heritage (lapsed or practising).

So what happens is the even if Canadians themselves aren't necessarily socially conservative, many are eager to adapt their way and those of society so as not to offend newcomers or make them uncomfortable.

As a result, alcohol at office parties when staff is diverse isn't as common as it once was. For example.

Some people are even questioning whether a place like a local brewpub is an appropriate venue for a going-away or retirement party, or if the practice of drinks after work isn't racist.
I hadn't heard about the M&M story so I did some digging, since I am interested in advertising, PR and marketing, having taken courses in all three, and wanted to go into that business.

It's all about money and knowing your target audience. I'm pretty sure they know who their market is, and how to appeal to them. Any rumblings of discontent, or tarnishing the brand would be on their minds. I'm sure they choose their battles carefully.

It's also my guess that having a " sexy " M&M to many, was akin to an ad from the 1950's where a woman is practically humping the new 1952 Buick. Not a good look in the 21st Century for most.

As for alcohol, society has changed. It started decades ago. I remember when I worked part-time at a department store. During Christmas several stock rooms were turned into bars. The only rule from our managers was not to get too drunk. Unthinkable today.

In my next job, it was common for us to have lunch in a pub with a couple of beers. It was tolerated and not considered unusual. Sort of like the 3 Martini lunch. Again, unthinkable today. It stopped in the early 1990's.

From my observations the changes happened for a lot of reasons. Woman in the workforce, and in positions of power didn't belong to the " old boys club " of drinkers...so rules changed. Not entirely by women of course, but at the same time the adverse affects of alcohol and alcoholism were more openly discussed.

Drinking at work or during work would be a concern especially if someone got hurt on company property. As for
after work events, it would depend if it's company sanctioned or not. I can see a company sanctioned event not having alcohol.

I've never heard anyone linking after work drinks and racism.

We’re becoming a less social society I think, it’s sad. The average person probably spends more time communicating on the internet like this than in real life. One thing I love about travelling is how much friendlier people are in other countries. Too much pressure is put on social interactions these days. Just because you have conversation with the guy sitting across from you in the train doesn’t mean you’re his friend or you have to see him again. It just used to be a way to pass the time. I understand why women are more cautious around strange men though because of all the crazies out there that might make a scene if the conversation doesn’t go the way they like. I personally would love more office parties and happy hours at my workplace, but it doesn’t seem like something anyone else wants. People just wanna get home to their families

The internet is a double edged sword. On the one hand, as you point out, some people interact less with people, but many have some contact where they might not have before. It may just be on the net, but at least it's a form of communication.

I have always been very social. I use the internet for a bit of that, but still meet up with friends and attend events etc. Like today...of to the pub to meet up with a group of friends.

Younger people. I'm not sure. Their world and use of the internet is so different than mine.

Speaking of meeting strangers and just chatting. I still enjoy that. What I don't like is the questions like
" Are you on....FB, Instagram etc " I hate feeling obligated to befriend someone on social media after not really knowing them. I usually lie, and say. No, I'm not on any of those.

I'm probably going to hell.

Latest Angus Reid poll: Two-in-three Canadians believe Beijing did attempt election interference

Quote:
Majorities across the political spectrum are of this view, while half of Canadians say this attempted interference represents a serious threat to democracy (53%).
Quote:
Two-thirds (64%), including majorities of past Conservative (88%) and Liberal (52%) voters alike, say Ottawa needs to put additional focus on this area.
Quote:
Seven-in-ten (69%) Canadians believe “the federal government is afraid to stand up to China.” Nine-in-ten (91%) past CPC voters, three-in-five (62%) past NDP voters and more than two-in-five (46%) past Liberal voters agree.

Canadians are split as to whether they are worried about the economic consequences of standing up to China (46%) or not (46%). This concern is highest among residents in Quebec (51%), Ontario (48%) and Atlantic Canada (48%).

One-third (32%) of past Liberal voters believe the allegations of interference from Beijing in Canada’s elections are “overblown.” However, more (43%) of those who voted Liberal in 2021 believe the allegations to be a serious threat to Canada’s democracy.

I was under the impression that they did. Most Hindus I’ve interacted with certainly did.

I suppose most Eastern Religions are less strict with their guidelines than Western faiths. I have known Hindus who drink alcohol, but was under the impression that those that do were in the minority because most Hindus I’ve talked to on the subject said they do not drink due to their religion. Not that I’m an expert or anything, I could be totally wrong. That’s just the impression I’ve gotten.
