Non-chain depanneurs, definitely.

I've noticed that most depanneurs in Montreal are owned by Chinese immigrants.

You see other groups too once in a while such as Indian, Sri Lankan, Bangladeshi, Filipino, Korean.

If you think about it, with limited knowledge in both French and English, it might be the most viable option for a living.

It's also not a particularly easy or safe way of living. Work hours are often long and convenience stores are easy targets for robbers because they are poorly guarded and often staffed by young inexperienced workers or as you said immigrants with little knowledge of the local language or authorities. It's definitely a place you'd feel that you really earned your money through hard work.
