We didn't have a family gathering but yesterday I made a roast duck dinner for my husband and myself and one for my parents (took it to their place).

Roast duck with orange sauce, mashed potatoes, broccoli, mustard pickles and my mother shared a pumpkin pie.

I am thankful we made it this far. I'm thankful my mother made it through her cancer treatments. I'm just really thankful that so far no one I'm close to has gotten seriously ill.

So, I’m wondering....what are the traditional foods served for Thanksgiving in Canada? Do they differ from the US version?

Not really. In the olden days, Canadian school children were given colouring sheets: one with a turkey, another with the Horn of Plenty. They learned about the harvest.

Supper is a roast turkey or other bird, such as duck or Cornish hens, cranberry sauce, in-bird stuffing, potatoes (usually mashed), gravy, yams and a couple of vegetables. Dessert usually includes a couple of pies options like pumpkin and apple.

You see less candied yams with mini marshmallows here. Some people I know do a ham instead, although we do it for Easter.

The main difference is that there is no pilgrim story. It's all about the harvest and being thankful.
