Boy oh boy; did this guy ever throw the cat into the pigeon coup.

Spoiler Alert: A senior citizen rant.

His timing is impeccable. Right at the time the government is most vulnerable he throws down a gauntlet in front of the entire Canadian public.

He has presented a report basically demanding carefully worded legislation be put to the house that would forever remove the ombudsman's office from under federal government authority and budgeting constraints.

He has scathingly reported to us all that any number of ombudsman reports over the last 23 years have been ignored, or worse, stifled.

He lays responsibility for nothing being done directly at the feet of Trudeau and Sajjan.

My personal observations/opinions:

No Defense Minister should be appointed from current serving military ranks. Especially one junior in rank to current serving officers. The "culture of rank" is tantamount in this instance to putting a private in charge of the officer's billeting and mess funds.

This latest ombudsman revelation will almost certainly elicit a response from all the spotlighted parties claiming to have taken all appropriate action when in fact his last report was ignored completely for a period of 6 full months before even acknowledging receipt of the report, with no definitive responses to the report ever coming from the Defense Minister's office.

Couple this indictment upon the sitting government with all the other stuff piled up waiting to topple and I would go so far as to predict anything up to and including a vote of non-confidence with the NDP tipping the scales.

It's probably not coincidental Mr. Lick reserved his report for a time when the pandemic has progressed to the point of being somewhat effectively dealt with and out of the rhealm of experiencing any marked set-back through a change of leadership.

Governments need to be reminded constantly that the corruption they bury today will only smell a lot worse and be ten times more costly when it is almost certainly dug up later.
