Yes,it can get very cold in winter, and I have a detached garage (unheated) with a plug for my block heater. You have to have a good battery, but your car will start even if not plugged in,it just takes longer to get warmed up. You never leave your car running unattended-not only are you asking to get it stolen, but after it warms up,the engine will start normally even if you are parked a couple of hours (just don't forget to turn off the headlights!)
Honestly, I've never really put any thought into Manitoba. I think Manitoba is the least talked about province in the country from my perspective. That's probably a good thing though. Better being Manitoba than boom-BUST Alberta I guess.
Well,my sister lives within walking distance of Lake Ontario, and when I visit her,the first thing I notice is the stink from pollution coming from industry across the lake, and a coal fired generating plant near her home.We have clean air in Manitoba, and get our electricity from hydro.Ontario may be the Center of the Universe, but I prefer breathing clean air!
I think of it as a tundra that has nothing really to offer me. I'm sure some people like it but the few days that I spent there pretty much confirmed to me what I already thought about the place. I just am not into endless winters, sticky summers and high crime.
Mosquitoes: None in BC ! Don't remember any flying biting objects there at all.
None in NS in the second half of August -September! Those are the two best months to come here. Blackflies: May-June, mosquitoes: June-July. Blackflies are worse than mosquitoes, personally.
I think its true most Canadians say "oh" because they don't know anything much about Manitoba other than the winters are brutal cold. I did notice once though when I had Manitoba plates that people in BC looked at us really weirdly and not in a friendly way. Maybe they were afraid we were poor gypsies come to steal there BC gold.
Since you've lived in WPG, I guess you know about it already, but I would agree to the pluses of no smog, low cost of living, lots of wildlife, great musical creativity, minuses of mosquitoes, flooding and high crime in WPG.
I was surprised at how beautiful Manitoba was, even though it can be bleak at times, lots of wildlife and birds - pelicans and cranes even.
I used to live in Saskatchewan, and its so flat(how flat is it!) Its so flat I watched my dog run away for 3 days!
I love Corner Gas too.
