We will be relocating to West Island soon. We are a bilingual (French-English) and biracial family. I was wondering if there were any areas to avoid or anyplace that would be more receptive to my black children. I ask because we once rented a house in the States and then discovered that the head of the KKK lived nearby. I would appreciate any advice.
Having lived in the US and other parts of Canada, I would say that there are few if any more accepting and racially tolerant places than Montreal. Even the West Island, which is largely white except for DDO and Pierrefonds, lacks the kind of racism you'd find on a daily basis in the US. True, being black (or even half so) has its demands anywhere on this continent and you will encounter the occasional 80-year-old bigot, but I think your kids will be fine.
Still, if the West Island doesn't suit your fancy, you might try other places closer to downtown with plenty of single-family units. Lachine, for instance, seems to have a higher than average number of mixed couples with kids.
Thanks so much for your advice; it's so hard to find these things out when you are far away. We'll look in those areas.
