I've driven the Alcan 15 times now and all this time I've wondered if anyone follows the posted speed limits? I try to stay within the posted limits and no matter where I go I get passed, even by RCMP! How much over does everyone travel? I'm sure a lot of Canadians get mad when they see an Alaskan license plate going slow.

If the posted speed limit is 100km/h then you can usually go 125km/h safely. And by that I mean without much risk of getting a ticket. I mostly drive in Ontario though and every province will likely have their own quirks.

Forget that in Alberta! We now have sheriffs that patrol the AB highways and their sole responsibility is to stop vehicles for traffic violations. If the speed limit is 100 km/hr. then you should be safe up to 110, but anything over that and the sheriffs will pull you over. Minimum fine for speeding here is about $150.

I'm not in B.C. but my brother is an RCMP officer. He only pulls people over when they are at least 10km over the limit. But as someone said, I'm sure each area, as well as individual police officers have their own quirks.

As far as out-of-province plates go, when I see a driver whose plates indicate he is not from the area, I understand why he or she might be going slower than normal. It doesn't tick me off whereas I might otherwise mumble profanities under my breath if it were a driver with local plates.

I would hope that most people would be understanding of non-local travellers since most people, at one time or another, have been in the same predicament.

Ontario has huge signs on the 401 now about speeding - supposedly, if you go 150 (50 kmph over), you can be fined $10,000 and have your car impounded. The posted fines start at 120, but I've seen the flow of traffic on there going 125 (at least), and I've seen people doing well over that. I see people getting ticketed a lot more here in Ohio than I ever did in Ontario.

In Ontario I usually drive about 120 MPH Canadian (about 67 American) and the posted limit is like 100 MPH Canadian and they have never bothered me. I would not go any faster though.

Depends if you're going with the flow of traffic.. you could get away with as much as 25 km/h over the speed limit, but on regular roads i go no more than 10 km/h over.

What exactly is 120MPH Canadian? Or 100 MPH Canadian?

Does Miles Per Hour different in Canada?

KevK was a little confused. There was no reason for him to use the word "Canadian" at all.

I think he meant to say 120 KPH and 100 KPR since speed is measured in kilometers per hour in Canada as I am sure you are aware.

So in Canada on dashboards in vehicles do they only show metric or do they show both?
