St. Vital is a very big middle to upper middle class suburb area of the city. It has parks a fairly big nearby mall, good schools, all that stuff. It's very safe.

If that's what you are looking for then you will enjoy it. I am more of an urban feel person so that area does nothing for me, but in terms of raising a family and having schools it's fine. There are lots of areas in the city that fit that bill... In fact I would say bad schools are far and few between in Winnipeg although there are some but not very many.

The crime thing is a bit over rated, imo its a problem that happens everywhere. I still believe we are the nicest and friendliest Provence out there. They dont call us "friendly MB for nothing"

Default Hi

Hi, I'm new to this site and if I've posted this in the wrong section I'm sorry.

I just got offered a job in Winnipeg as a doctor in hematology. I have family living here and they say it's a good place to stay, but I've done research on the internet and I have heard it is crime infested. Would you say that it is all like this, or is it just in some areas? What are areas to avoid? Also, is housing affordable?

I would be moving from New Zealand, so the cold would affect me quite bad. How do you cope? The heating systems here are terrible and inefficient, what are they like over there?

I would be looking for an area with good schooling as I have 2 children, 4 and 12. Are private schools affordable and good there? Is it worth sending them to private school or is it the same as a public?

Basically, I would be looking for a kid-friendly, safe, and affordable area. I would be looking at anything under 650k. If not Winnipeg, what are some other places in Canada that I should look into? I also applied for a job in Toronto, but I haven't heard anything from them yet.

Thanks in advance,
Healthman

Crime is not much different than any other large city in Canada. Stay away from the North End and the West End because that's usually where more of the crime happens. The rest of the areas are pretty good though. Housing is very affordable and you can easily get a nice house for under 650k there. It is a very affordable city to live in. There are many nice areas to live around the city. The northern areas of the city have some cool family neighborhoods like North Kildonan and Charleswood in the west is also a good area too.

Heating systems are done properly in Canada and houses are well insulated. (I am actually chilly more often in temperate UK than I ever was in Canada) Indoors you'll be fine and your house will be better heated, a more consistent temperature. The summers are beautiful in Winnipeg. The winters? Bitterly cold and windy.

You simply operate differently in the winter in Canada: you park your car in the garage, you dress properly with gloves with proper insulation, decent hat (toque), down coat, proper footwear, a scarf that you can wrap around your face if need be.

There's alot lots of nice cities to live in in Canada. Just a smattering of nice cities, by no means exhaustive, would be Halifax, Nova Scotia; Victoria, British Columbia; Kingston, Ontario; St. John's, Newfoundland; London, Ontario; Kelowna, British Columbia; and Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. These are all charming cities to live in and raise a family.
